F / col TEM of Haemophilus influenzae
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Haemophilus influenzae (Pfeiffers bacillus), a Gram negative, non-motile, non- sporing species of bacilli (rod-shaped bacteria). H. influenzae is exclusively a parasite of man, living in the upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. Most sub-species are non-capsulate bacteria, but there are 6 types of capsulated strains (types a to f), of which type b is responsible for numerous incidences of bacterial meningitis in young infants. Other type b diseases include epiglottitis, a potential cause of fatal obstruction in the airways. Magnification: x16, 000 at 35mm size, x32, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) captures the intricate details of Haemophilus influenzae, also known as Pfeiffer's bacillus. This Gram-negative, non-motile, and non-sporing species of rod-shaped bacteria is exclusively a parasite of humans, residing in the upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. Most sub-species of H. influenzae are non-capsulated bacteria; however, there are six types of capsulated strains labeled from type a to f. Among these strains, type b has gained notoriety for its association with numerous cases of bacterial meningitis in young infants. Additionally, it can cause epiglottitis - a potentially fatal obstruction in the airways. Under magnification at 35mm size, this TEM print reveals H. influenzae at an impressive x16,000 magnification; whereas at 6x7cm size it reaches an even more detailed x32,000 magnification. Bacteriology enthusiasts and microbiologists will appreciate this image for its scientific significance and aesthetic appeal. It serves as a reminder that within our own bodies exists a complex world teeming with diverse microorganisms like H. influenzae - both beneficial and harmful.
