F / col TEM of Enterococcus faecalis

Enterococcus faecalis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). This gram-positive ellipsoidal bacterium tends to form short chains. The bacterium at centre is in the process of dividing through binary fission. E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may also cause bacterial endocarditis following gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery: this is important because of its resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics. x38, 000 at 35mm size, x76, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the F/col TEM of Enterococcus faecalis, a gram-positive ellipsoidal bacterium that tends to form short chains. At the center of the image, we witness this fascinating microbe in the midst of dividing through binary fission. Enterococcus faecalis is an intriguing bacterium as it exists naturally within the human alimentary tract but can also cause infections in the urinary tract. Additionally, it has been known to lead to bacterial endocarditis following gynecological or genito-urinary surgery. What makes this particularly concerning is its resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics. The vibrant colors used in this transmission electron micrograph beautifully highlight the intricate details of Enterococcus faecalis. With a magnification of x38,000 at 35mm size and x76,000 at 6x7cm size, every minuscule aspect becomes visible for examination. This photograph not only serves as a stunning visual representation but also offers valuable insights into microbiology and bacteriology research. It sheds light on antibiotic resistance and emphasizes the importance of understanding these microorganisms' behavior for medical purposes. Captured by Science Photo Library, this print brings together artistry and scientific exploration seamlessly while reminding us of both the beauty and complexity found within our microscopic world.
