F / col shadow TEM of E. coli dividing

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestine, in the act of dividing. The shadow technique used in this TEM reveals hair-like pili fringing the cell wall; a certain type of pili, the sex pili, are involved in the transfer of DNA during bacterial conjugation. Under certain conditions E. coli bacteria may become harmful & cause infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. This bacterium is in the early stages of binary fission, the process by which the organism divides in two. Magnification: x4700 at 35mm size, x9400 at 6x7cm size. EDITORS COMMENTS

This false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) print showcases the process of cell division in Escherichia coli, a bacterium commonly found in the human intestine. The intricate shadow technique employed in this TEM image unveils delicate hair-like pili that adorn the bacterial cell wall. Among these pili, known as sex pili, some play a crucial role in DNA transfer during bacterial conjugation. Under specific circumstances, E. coli bacteria can transform from harmless inhabitants to harmful agents capable of causing infections in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. This particular bacterium captured by the lens is at an early stage of binary fission – a remarkable process through which it divides into two separate entities. At magnifications of x4700 for 35mm prints and x9400 for 6x7cm prints, this photograph offers an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world of bacteria. It serves as a testament to the power and precision of transmission electron microscopy, enabling scientists to explore and understand microorganisms with unparalleled detail. The Science Photo Library has expertly curated this image to highlight key aspects such as transmission, microbe research, bacteriology, bacterial biology, TEM techniques, pilus structures involved in cellular processes like binary fission and conjugation.
