Exoplanet types, artwork C016 / 5354

Exoplanet types. Artwork of a range of types of extrasolar planets that have been discovered beyond our Solar System. These exoplanets range from very large gas giant planets (upper right), to super-Earth (centre left), Earthlike (lower left), gaseous, icy, hot, and rocky planets (lower right). As of mid-2013, some 900 alien planets have been detected, in some 700 planetary systems, with many thousands more not yet confirmed. Around 260 may be capable of supporting life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Exoplanet types, artwork C016 / 5354" showcases a stunning array of extrasolar planets that have been discovered beyond our Solar System. The artwork beautifully depicts the diverse range of exoplanets, from colossal gas giants dominating the upper right corner to smaller super-Earths in the center left. In the lower left, we find Earthlike planets that bear resemblance to our own blue planet. The image also highlights other intriguing exoplanet variations such as gaseous, icy, hot, and rocky planets scattered across the lower right section. Each planet type represents a unique combination of size, atmosphere, geology, and composition. As of mid-2013 when this photo was taken by Richard Bizley for Science Photo Library, astronomers had detected approximately 900 alien planets within some 700 planetary systems. However, countless more await confirmation with an estimated thousands yet to be discovered. Remarkably, around 260 of these known exoplanets may possess conditions suitable for supporting life. This extraordinary visual sequence offers us a glimpse into the vastness and diversity of our universe while igniting curiosity about what lies beyond our familiar celestial neighborhood. It serves as a reminder that there is still so much to explore and learn about these distant worlds – both inhabited and lifeless – expanding our understanding of planetary science and astrophysics alike.
