This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Europe and the Middle East at night, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS) on October 21st, 2011. Taken by astronauts during a time-lapse series of stills, this particular frame showcases an awe-inspiring view. In the foreground lies Turkey, while Cyprus appears as a tear-shaped island on the right side of the image. The dark expanse to the far left represents the Black Sea, contrasting with cities along Syria's coastline that light up in vibrant hues towards the middle right. Every 90 minutes, it completes one orbit around Earth. This extraordinary photograph not only offers us a glimpse into our world from above but also highlights human presence through city lights illuminating various regions. As we marvel at this image captured by Science Photo Library's astronaut photography collection, let us appreciate both its scientific significance and artistic allure. It serves as a reminder of humanity's ability to explore beyond our earthly boundaries and witness firsthand how different parts of our planet come alive under darkness – showcasing both natural beauty and human civilization coexisting harmoniously within our vast universe.
