Eryops prehistoric amphibians, artwork C013 / 5756

Eryops. Computer artwork of two Eryops prehistoric amphibians in a Carboniferous swamp, 300 million years ago, in what is today North America. This predator measured up to 2 metres in length and weighed around 90 kilograms. It probably spent most of its time in the water, and like modern crocodiles probably fed on fish and other swimming vertebrates. Also seen is a snake-like, legless amphibian from the genus Ophiderpeton (lower right) and a dragonfly-like insect from the genus Meganeura. The tree-like plants in the surrounding forest include Sigillaria scutellata and Lepidodendron aculeatum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back 300 million years ago to the Carboniferous period in North America, where a prehistoric scene unfolds before our eyes. The artwork beautifully depicts two Eryops amphibians, formidable predators that measured up to 2 meters in length and weighed around 90 kilograms. These ancient creatures likely spent most of their time submerged in the water, reminiscent of modern-day crocodiles. Feeding on fish and other swimming vertebrates, they were skilled hunters of their time. In addition to the Eryops, we catch a glimpse of other fascinating inhabitants of this primordial swamp. A legless amphibian from the genus Ophiderpeton slithers across the lower right corner while a majestic dragonfly-like insect from the Meganeura genus hovers above them all. Surrounding this diverse ecosystem are towering tree-like plants such as Sigillaria scutellata and Lepidodendron aculeatum. This extraordinary snapshot offers us a window into an era long gone but not forgotten - an era when these remarkable species roamed freely amidst lush vegetation and murky waters. It is through such illustrations that we can appreciate Earth's rich natural history and marvel at its ever-evolving flora and fauna.
