This 1889 engraving showcases the esteemed German surgeon, Ernst von Bergmann. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to aseptic surgery, von Bergmann revolutionized the field by introducing steam heat sterilization of surgical instruments. This innovative technique dramatically reduced rates of surgical infections caused by sepsis, marking a significant milestone in medical history. Von Bergmann's expertise was shaped by his experiences during the Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878), where he witnessed firsthand the perils of unsanitary conditions during surgeries. In this black and white portrait, we see von Bergmann depicted with utmost dignity and professionalism against a plain white background. His piercing gaze reflects both intelligence and determination as he stands as a pioneer in his field. This historical illustration captures not only the essence of Ernst von Bergmann but also represents an era when medical breakthroughs were transforming healthcare practices.
