Engraving showing Bessemer converter, 1860 design

Engraving showing the operation of a Bessemer converter. The version seen here was designed in 1860, and is essentially the same as those used today for steel making. Fig.A shows the outside of the converter. Fig.B shows the converter being charged with molten iron, Fig.C shows air being blown through the furnace from the tuyeres in the base. Fig.D shows the resulting steel being poured into a ladle (Fig.E), which in turn is tapped at its base to fill ingot moulds (Fig.F). Fig.G shows the arrangement of the tuyeres in the base of the converter, shown in detail in Fig.H. This picture first appeared in the imaginatively-titled book " An Autobiography" by Sir Henry Bessemer in 1905

Converter History Of Science 19th Cent Bessemer Steel Making

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of industrialization and steel making. The engraving showcases the revolutionary Bessemer converter, designed in 1860, which remains remarkably similar to its modern counterparts used today. In Fig. A, we witness the impressive exterior of the converter, while Fig. B reveals molten iron being charged into it. As depicted in Fig. C, air is forcefully blown through the furnace from tuyeres located at its base. This crucial step initiates a transformative chemical reaction that converts iron into high-quality steel. Fig. D portrays the culmination of this process as liquid steel is poured into a ladle (Fig. E). To further refine and shape this valuable material, the ladle is then tapped at its base to fill ingot molds showcased in Fig. F. These molds serve as vessels for solidifying and shaping steel ingots. The intricate arrangement of tuyeres within the converter's base can be observed in detail through Fig. G and Fig. H. These small openings play an instrumental role by facilitating controlled airflow during conversion. Originally featured in Sir Henry Bessemer's autobiography published in 1905 titled "An Autobiography" this image offers us a glimpse into an era where innovation was transforming industries worldwide. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancements that have shaped our modern world while honoring Bessemer's pioneering contributions to foundry technology.
