Engineer working on tokamak fusion reactor at JET

Nuclear fusion reactor. An engineer welds compon- ents on the experimental tokamak nuclear fusion reactor at JET (Joint European Torus). The JET tokamak is the worlds biggest nuclear fusion machine. It consists of a large, doughnut-shaped vacuum vessel, in which a minute quantity of hy- drogen is super-heated to over 100 million degrees (10 times hotter than the centre of the Sun). In the resulting " plasma", electrons are torn apart from atomic nuclei, and some of the nuclei collide and fuse, releasing fusion energy. Problems with impurities in the plasma mean that nuclear fusion technology is yet to get beyond the experimental stage. JET is based in Culham, UK

Energy Fusion Nuclear Nuclear Fusion Research Tokamak Torus

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the incredible work of an engineer as they diligently weld components on the experimental tokamak fusion reactor at JET (Joint European Torus). This remarkable machine holds the title of being the largest nuclear fusion device in the world. The JET tokamak is a marvel to behold, with its enormous doughnut-shaped vacuum vessel serving as its core. Within this vessel, a minuscule amount of hydrogen is subjected to extreme temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees - ten times hotter than the center of our own Sun. The result? A mesmerizing state known as "plasma" where electrons are forcefully separated from atomic nuclei and some nuclei collide and fuse together, releasing immense amounts of fusion energy. However, despite these awe-inspiring advancements in nuclear fusion technology, challenges persist due to impurities within the plasma. As such, commercial use remains elusive for now. Located in Culham, UK, JET stands proudly as a symbol of human ingenuity and determination in unlocking clean and sustainable sources of energy. This photograph serves as a testament to both scientific progress and our collective pursuit towards harnessing nuclear fusion's immense potential for powering our future industries without harming our environment. Captured by Science Photo Library with their unparalleled expertise in showcasing groundbreaking scientific achievements through visual storytelling; this image encapsulates humanity's relentless quest for innovation and discovery within the realm of nuclear fusion research at Joint European Torus (JET).
