Emperor penguin rookery
Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) rookery on sea ice. The grey-feathered chicks are three months old. The adults feed them by regurgitating fish. These are the only penguins to breed in the Antarctic during the winter. Each pair produces a single egg, which the males incubate on their feet, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in large groups. Males fast during the two month incubation period and lose almost half their body mass by the end. The emperor is the largest penguin, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed at Cape Washington, Antarctica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases an Emperor penguin rookery on the vast sea ice of Antarctica. The image captures a group of grey-feathered chicks, approximately three months old, surrounded by their majestic adult counterparts. These incredible creatures have a unique breeding pattern as they are the only penguins to reproduce in the harsh Antarctic winter. The adults diligently care for their young by regurgitating fish to nourish them. To endure the extreme cold, these devoted parents incubate a single egg on their feet while huddling together in large groups for warmth. During this two-month period, males fast and remarkably lose nearly half of their body mass. Emperor penguins hold the title for being the largest species of penguins, standing tall at around 115 centimeters and weighing between 30 to 40 kilograms. This photograph was taken at Cape Washington and beautifully depicts the frozen landscape where these flightless birds gather to breed. In this snapshot of nature's wonder, we witness a thriving colony engaged in reproduction amidst icy surroundings. These carnivorous creatures rely on fish as their primary food source and exhibit remarkable adaptability to survive in such challenging conditions. Science Photo Library has captured both the beauty and scientific significance of this moment with precision and artistry - showcasing not just an awe-inspiring sight but also providing valuable insight into emperor penguin behavior within its natural habitat.
