Elihu Thomson (1853-1937), American engineer
Elihu Thomson (1853-1937), American electrical engineer. He moved from England to the USA when young. After graduating, he taught chemistry and physics, forming a partnership with fellow teacher Edwin J. Houston. They designed an arc-lighting system, the funds from which allowed them to set up the Thomson- Houston Electric Company in 1883. This merged with Edisons Electric Company to form General Electric in 1892. Thomson filed over 700 patents, including ones for generators, AC motors & electric welders. He also proposed the use of a helium-oxygen mix to prevent decompression illness in divers. He was awarded the John Fritz medal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Elihu Thomson, an influential American engineer. Born in England but later immigrating to the United States, Thomson's passion for science led him on a remarkable journey. After completing his education, he joined forces with fellow teacher Edwin J. Houston to design an innovative arc-lighting system. The success of this venture enabled them to establish the renowned Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1883. Thomson's contributions to engineering were vast and groundbreaking. With over 700 patents under his name, he revolutionized various fields including generators, AC motors, and electric welders. His inventive spirit extended beyond electricity as well; he even proposed using a helium-oxygen mix known as heliox to prevent decompression illness among divers. Recognizing his exceptional achievements, Thomson was honored with the prestigious John Fritz medal for his outstanding contributions to the field of engineering. This striking portrait captures not only his intelligence but also reflects upon the historical significance of his work. As we admire this photograph from Science Photo Library, let us remember Elihu Thomson as a true pioneer whose brilliance forever shaped our understanding and utilization of electrical power.
