EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Egyptian obelisks, dating back to the 16th century. The artwork depicts ruins and obelisks in Alexandria, Egypt, which were originally erected by the Ancient Egyptians at temple entrances. These remarkable structures have withstood the test of time, some even tracing their origins back thousands of years. Over centuries, examples of these obelisks have been periodically rediscovered and excavated from the desert sands. This woodcut is a part of Andre Thevet's renowned book "Cosmographie universelle" published in 1575. The French explorer and writer meticulously described his travels through various lands, including Egypt. The image portrays a male figure observing these historical relics amidst the vast desert landscape. It highlights both the architectural grandeur and religious symbolism associated with Egyptian culture during this era. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of mystery to this archaeological scene while emphasizing its medieval origins. Hieroglyphics adorn these towering structures, serving as pictograms that communicate ancient messages from a distant past. Todd-White Art Photography has expertly captured this momentous piece of history for us to appreciate today. Through this photograph, we are transported to North Africa's rich heritage and reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with our collective pasts.
