Eggs of the glass eel, Anguilla japonicum
Eel eggs. Light micrograph of the eggs of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonicum. The eggs are transparent and the developing embryos can be seen within them. A. japonicum spends its adult life in freshwater rivers along the coast of China, Korea and Japan. The eels migrate to spawn in the Pacific Ocean west of the Mariana Islands. The adults die after spawning. The eggs hatch about 36 hours after fertilisation, releasing a larva about 3 millimetres long. The eel larvae live at a depth of about 75m. They are swept along by ocean currents back towards the Asian mainland. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the delicate and transparent eggs of the glass eel, Anguilla japonicum. Through the lens of a light micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the fascinating world within these tiny eggs. The developing embryos can be seen, hinting at new life waiting to emerge. Anguilla japonicum is an extraordinary species that spends its adult life in freshwater rivers along China's coast, as well as Korea and Japan. However, when it comes time to reproduce, these eels embark on an incredible journey. They migrate towards the Pacific Ocean west of the Mariana Islands to spawn before meeting their demise. The eggs themselves hatch approximately 36 hours after fertilization, giving birth to larvae measuring about 3 millimeters long. These young eels find themselves living at depths around 75 meters below sea level. Guided by ocean currents, they are swept back towards mainland Asia. This image not only highlights nature's intricate beauty but also offers insight into the complex life cycle of this particular species. It serves as a reminder of how diverse and awe-inspiring our planet truly is—filled with creatures like Anguilla japonicum that continue to amaze us with their remarkable adaptations and journeys across vast distances.
