Earths limb, Jupiter & crescent moon
Airglow. View from Shuttle Endeavour showing the Earths airglow. The white point near centre is the planet Jupiter, above this is the crescent Moon. The airglow phenomenon is seen when looking toward the Sun before dawn or after sunset in orbit. Different layers of the atmosphere may be seen. The ragged appearance of the limb is caused by silhouetted cirrus clouds. Above this is a red layer of highly-refracted light. The darker layer is composed of dust particles from volcanic events, such as the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. Above this is a weakly refracting blue layer of the upper atmosphere. This photograph was taken during Mission STS-61 of 2-13 December 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the ethereal beauty of Earth's limb, Jupiter, and a delicate crescent moon against the backdrop of mesmerizing airglow. Taken from Shuttle Endeavour during Mission STS-61 in December 1993, this remarkable image showcases the phenomenon of airglow as seen from orbit. The white point at the center represents our mighty neighbor, Jupiter, while above it gracefully hangs a slender crescent moon. The airglow spectacle unfolds when gazing towards the Sun before dawn or after sunset in space. As layers of Earth's atmosphere come into view, we witness its captivating diversity. The ragged appearance along the limb is caused by silhouetted cirrus clouds that add an element of mystique to this celestial scene. Above them lies a striking red layer where highly-refracted light dances through space. This darker layer consists of dust particles from volcanic events like Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991. Further up, we encounter a weakly refracting blue layer that belongs to Earth's upper atmosphere—a subtle reminder of our planet's intricate composition and atmospheric dynamics. This awe-inspiring photograph not only celebrates astronomy but also serves as a testament to humanity's exploration beyond our home planet. It reminds us of both the fragility and grandeur found within our vast universe—an invitation to marvel at the wonders that lie just beyond our reach.
