The lunar horizon is about 570 kilometers from the spacecraft, whilst the Earth is 384, 000 kilometers distant. In this view, the Earth is seen with the South Pole as the white patch at the left end of the terminator. Part of the west coast of Africa may be seen at the right end of the terminator, North and South America being hidden by cloud at the top of the disc. The lunar terrain in the foreground is near the eastern limb of the Moon, as viewed from Earth. Apollo 8: Witnessing the Awe-Inspiring Earthrise Over the Moon On December 21,1968, history was made as astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first humans to leave Earth's orbit and travel to another celestial body. During their historic 6-day mission, they orbited the Moon 10 times, providing humanity with an unprecedented view of our home planet from another world. This iconic photograph, titled "Earthrise," was taken on the morning of December 24,1968, as Apollo 8 was leaving the far side of the Moon. The lunar horizon, approximately 570 kilometers from the spacecraft, is visible in the foreground, with the Earth, a staggering 384,000 kilometers away, rising majestically behind it. The South Pole of the Earth is visible as a distinct white patch at the left end of the terminator, the line that separates day and night on a planet. Part of the western coast of Africa can be seen at the right end of the terminator, with North and South America hidden by clouds at the top of the disc. The lunar terrain in the foreground is near the eastern limb of the Moon, as viewed from Earth.
