Early Soviet rocket research, 1933

Early Soviet rocket research, 1933. This is the first Soviet mixed-fuel rocket launch. The rocket, GIRD 09, was launched on 17 August 1933, in the Nakhabino forests, near Moscow, Russia. The rocket was launched by members of the Moscow Group for Reactive Motion (GIRD), led by Sergei Korolev (lower right, 1907-1966). It was powered by a gasoline and oxygen mixture, reaching a height of 400 metres and landing 150 metres from the launch site. After the Second World War, Korolev worked to develop rockets for space exploration and military use. He designed the spacecraft that carried the first man into space

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the early Soviet rocket research of 1933. In this groundbreaking image, we witness the first mixed-fuel rocket launch by the Moscow Group for Reactive Motion (GIRD). Led by the brilliant Sergei Korolev, seen standing confidently in the lower right corner, these pioneering scientists and engineers paved the way for future space exploration. The rocket itself, known as GIRD 09, soared into the sky on that fateful day of August 17th. Powered by a revolutionary combination of gasoline and oxygen, it reached an impressive height of 400 meters before gracefully descending just 150 meters away from its launch site in Nakhabino forests near Moscow. Sergei Korolev's contributions to science did not end there. Following World War II, he dedicated himself to developing rockets for both military purposes and space exploration. His visionary designs even led to him creating the spacecraft that carried humanity's first astronaut into space. In this remarkable snapshot frozen in time, we glimpse at a pivotal moment where technology meets ambition. It serves as a reminder of how human ingenuity can push boundaries and shape our understanding of what is possible. This photograph stands as a testament to Sergei Korolev's legacy as one of history's greatest pioneers in rocketry and his instrumental role in propelling us towards an era of space flight.
