Early sighting of Brocken spectres, 1797

Early sighting of Brocken spectres. Historical artwork of a sighting of Brocken spectres, based on the account of a traveller called Hane. He and a companion climbed the Brocken, the tallest peak in Germanys Harz mountains, on 23 May 1797. Hane, who had made at least 30 previous trips, finally saw the shadows in the sky that came to be called Brocken spectres, named after this mountain. Hane and his companion raised and waved their hands, and saw the spectres imitate these movements. The Brocken spectres are shadows cast by a low-lying Sun on mists or clouds. This engraving is from The Atmosphere (1873) by Camille Flammarion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving transports us back to the year 1797, capturing an early sighting of Brocken spectres. The artwork is based on the account of a seasoned traveler named Hane, who embarked on his 31st expedition to the majestic Brocken peak in Germany's Harz mountains. On that fateful day of May 23rd, Hane and his companion were blessed with a remarkable sight that would forever be associated with this mountain. As they ascended towards the heavens, their eyes beheld an extraordinary phenomenon - shadows dancing in the sky. These ethereal figures came to be known as Brocken spectres, owing their name to this very mountain. Overwhelmed by awe and wonder, Hane and his companion instinctively raised their hands and waved them through thin air. To their astonishment, these celestial apparitions mirrored their movements. The Brocken spectres are born from a collaboration between a low-lying Sun and mist or clouds below it. This mesmerizing illustration was crafted by Camille Flammarion for his renowned work "The Atmosphere" published in 1873. In this historic masterpiece, we witness not only the birth of meteorology but also humanity's insatiable curiosity about our atmospheric surroundings. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of understanding nature's mysteries throughout history. Let us marvel at this snapshot frozen in time – an everlasting tribute to those brave observers who unraveled one more secret held within Europe's enchanting landscapes centuries ago.
