Dwarf planet Eris (UB313), artwork

Dwarf planet Eris. Computer artwork of dwarf planet Eris, formerly known as 2003 UB313. The Sun is at lower right. Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope have shown that Eris is slightly larger than Pluto. Until the vote by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on 24 August 2006 to modify the definition of a planet, it had been referred to as the 10th planet. It is now classified as a dwarf planet, an object large enough to be spherical due to gravity, that is in orbit around the sun, has not cleared its neighbourhood and is not a satellite of another planet. It is an icy body located in the Kuiper Belt of the outer solar system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the enigmatic dwarf planet Eris, formerly known as 2003 UB313. Bathed in the distant glow of the Sun at its lower right, this computer-generated image offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the outer reaches of our solar system. With images captured by the renowned Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have determined that Eris is slightly larger than Pluto. Once hailed as the tenth planet before a historic decision by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 2006 redefined what constitutes a planet, Eris now holds its place as a fascinating member of an exclusive group: dwarf planets. These celestial bodies are substantial enough to possess spherical shapes due to gravity but fall short of meeting all criteria for full planetary status. Located within the Kuiper Belt—a vast region beyond Neptune—Eris stands out among icy objects with its reflective surface and mysterious allure. Methane likely adorns its frosty exterior, adding to its ethereal beauty against the backdrop of space. As we delve deeper into planetary science and explore our cosmic neighborhood, photographs like this one from Science Photo Library remind us of how much there still is to uncover and understand about these far-flung worlds. Let your imagination wander through this breathtaking depiction of Eris—an icy sentinel silently orbiting our Sun amidst countless other wonders in our ever-expanding universe.
