Dust disc and jet around young star, HH-30
Jet from a young star. Visible light image of the Herbig-Haro object HH-30, a jet of gas about half a light year long, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. At the left is a dust cloud (green) which surrounds the young star. The stars light illuminates the upper and lower bounds of the dust. A jet of gas (red) is seen emitted from the centre of the cloud, probably by the young star itself along its rotational axis. The ejection of the gas jet may remove excess angular momentum, which would otherwise prevent further material accreting to the star. HH-30 is about 450 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of HH-30, a young star located approximately 450 light years away in the constellation Taurus. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, this visible light image reveals a stunning dust disc and jet surrounding the star. On the left side of the image, we can observe a vibrant green dust cloud enveloping the young star. The illumination from this stellar body casts an ethereal glow on both upper and lower boundaries of the dust cloud. It is within this celestial cocoon that new material may gather to fuel further growth and evolution. At the heart of this cosmic spectacle lies an awe-inspiring red gas jet emanating from the center of the dusty cloud. This powerful emission is believed to be expelled by none other than our youthful star itself along its rotational axis. By releasing this gas jet, excess angular momentum is effectively removed, enabling additional matter to accrete onto our budding celestial object. The intricate interplay between these elements - dust disc, illuminating starlight, and dynamic gas jet - offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most fascinating phenomena: stellar birth and formation. As we marvel at HH-30's half-light-year-long gas jet stretching across space, we are reminded once again of how vast and wondrous our universe truly is.
