Drying Mars in its past
Drying Mars. Image 3 of 4. Artwork of thin clouds and wet areas (dark) on Mars billions of years ago. It is thought that liquid water existed on Mars early in its history, but was lost to space over time. This may have been due to Mars weak gravity, thin atmosphere and weakening magnetic field. If liquid water did exist on Mars, there is a chance that life may have begun there. Numerous probes have so far failed to find any evidence for this, however. In the future, it may be possible to return Mars to a wet state artificially, and create an environment suitable for life once again. This process is called terraforming. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Drying Mars in its past" takes us on a visual journey billions of years back in time. The artwork showcases the intriguing concept of thin clouds and wet areas on Mars during its early history. It is believed that liquid water once flowed on the Red Planet, but gradually escaped into space due to various factors such as weak gravity, a thin atmosphere, and a weakening magnetic field. Scientists have tirelessly explored Mars with numerous probes, hoping to uncover evidence of past life. Unfortunately, their efforts have so far been fruitless. However, this image sparks our imagination about the possibility that life may have originated on Mars when it was still wet. Looking ahead to the future, there is an exciting prospect called terraforming - the process of artificially transforming a planet's environment to make it habitable for life forms. Scientists speculate that one day we might be able to bring water back to Mars and recreate conditions suitable for living organisms. The horizontal composition of this historical illustration adds depth and perspective as we contemplate humanity's quest for knowledge beyond our own planet. This thought-provoking artwork from Science Photo Library invites us to ponder our place in the universe while marveling at the mysteries hidden within our solar system's enigmatic neighbor - Mars.
