Drawing of the steam engine invented by Hero

First steam engine. Drawing of the first-ever steam engine or Aeoliphile, designed by the Greek engineer Hero of Alexandria (flourished 1st century AD). The vessel in the lower frame was filled with water which was then heated. Steam from the vessel travelled up the two tubes supporting the hollow sphere at upper centre. Two jets of steam escaped from bent tubes in the side of the sphere, making it rotate because of the law of action and reaction. Although this was the first steam engine, it was very inefficient and remained a novelty. The first practical steam engines appeared in the early 18th century. Heros engine was described in his Pneumatics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable drawing of the first-ever steam engine, also known as Aeoliphile, invented by the ingenious Greek engineer Hero of Alexandria during the 1st century AD. The intricate design is a testament to Hero's pioneering spirit and his contributions to ancient technology. In this illustration, we see a vessel positioned in the lower frame, filled with water that is gradually heated. As steam begins to form within the vessel, it ascends through two supporting tubes towards a hollow sphere located at the upper center. Ingeniously crafted bent tubes on either side of the sphere allow jets of steam to escape, resulting in rotational movement due to Newton's third law of motion - action and reaction. Although this groundbreaking creation marked humanity's first encounter with a steam engine, it remained largely inefficient and served primarily as an intriguing novelty rather than practical transportation or industrial machinery. It wasn't until centuries later in the early 18th century that more efficient and functional steam engines emerged. Hero's revolutionary invention was meticulously described in his work "Pneumatics" which delved into various aspects of air pressure and mechanics. This historical artifact not only highlights our fascination with land-based transportation but also sheds light on pivotal advancements made throughout history in science and engineering fields such as jet engines and other forms of propulsion. Displayed proudly by Science Photo Library, this image encapsulates both our admiration for past achievements while serving as a reminder of how far we have come in harnessing scientific knowledge for technological progress.
