Dragons blood trees

Dragons blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) at sunset. The dragons blood tree is endemic to the Socotran archipelago of islands, meaning that it is found nowhere else. When wounded, the tree produces a deep red resin. Traditionally, this has been harvested by the islanders for use as a medicine, perfume and pigment. Socotra is located in the Indian Ocean at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, 340 kilometres (km) from mainland Yemen and 250km from the coast of Somalia. Its isolation has led to the evolution of a unique flora and fauna. Photographed in the Haggier Mountains in Socotra, Yemen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the enchanting beauty of Dragons blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) at sunset. Found exclusively in the Socotran archipelago, these unique trees are truly a sight to behold. The image showcases their distinctive silhouette against the backdrop of a mesmerizing dusk sky. The Dragons blood tree is renowned for its ability to produce a deep red resin when wounded. For generations, the islanders have harvested this precious substance for various purposes such as medicine, perfume, and pigment. This ancient tradition adds an intriguing cultural dimension to the already fascinating botanical significance of these trees. Socotra itself is an isolated paradise located in the Indian Ocean near Yemen and Somalia. Its remote location has allowed for the evolution of a remarkable array of flora and fauna that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Nestled within the Haggier Mountains, this particular scene exemplifies Socotra's awe-inspiring landscape with its towering peaks and lush vegetation. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported into an untouched ecosystem where nature reigns supreme. The setting sun casts a warm glow over every detail - from each individual tree branch to the distant mountain ranges - creating a truly magical ambiance. This stunning image by Science Photo Library serves as both a testament to our planet's extraordinary biodiversity and an invitation to explore and appreciate its wonders firsthand.
