The dome of the William Herschel Telescope
View of the dome of the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, in the Canary Islands. Commissioned in 1987, and operated by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the telescope has one of the largest primary mirrors in the world. The telescope is placed on an azimuthal mounting in which the telescope swings in azimuth around a vertical axis and in altitude about an horizontal axis. The observatory is located on the lip of an extinct volcano at an altitude of about 2400 metres
