Dismantled loudspeaker

Dismantled loudspeaker. This is a device that is designed to convert electrical signals into sound waves. The two fixed components are the permanent magnet (black, lower centre) and a metal framework (the basket, grey). The magnet surrounds the voice coil (orange, centre). This is an electromagnetic coil that vibrates relative to the magnet when the electric sound signal is sent through it. The coil is held in place by the flexible spider structure (corrugated, red), but is also attached to the diaphragm (black). As the coil vibrates, it moves the diaphragm, producing the air pressure waves that are called sound waves

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a dismantled loudspeaker, revealing the intricate components that work harmoniously to convert electrical signals into sound waves. At the heart of this technological marvel lies two fixed elements: the permanent magnet and a metal framework known as the basket. The magnet envelops the vibrant orange voice coil, an electromagnetic coil that moves in response to electric sound signals passing through it. To ensure stability, the flexible spider structure securely holds the coil in place while also connecting it to the diaphragm. As this mesmerizing coil vibrates, it sets off a chain reaction, causing movement in the diaphragm which ultimately generates air pressure waves we perceive as sound. This image offers an educational insight into how speakers function by exposing their internal workings. It serves as a visual demonstration of electromagnetism and highlights how technology harnesses electricity to produce audio experiences for our enjoyment and understanding. With its cut-away view and emphasis on physical components like magnets and coils, this photograph is not only visually stunning but also provides an opportunity for anyone interested in physics or electronics to delve deeper into these fascinating subjects.
