1862 Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs

Lithograph with later hand colouring combining two of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins six wall posters " Waterhouse Hawkins Diagrams of the Extinct Animals" produced for the Department of Science and Art in 1862. It includes nearly all the dinosaurs known up to that date. From left 1 & 2 Iguanodon, 3 Hylaeosaurus, 4&5 Megalosaurus. On cliffs in background are pterosaurs (not dnosaurs). In 1855 Waterhouse Hawkins produced lifesize reconstructions, with the scientific help of Richard Owen, for the gardens of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. When that project was curtailed he continued to use the designs for artwork such as this, also producing scale models of the sculptures for sale. Later he travelled to the USA where he began work on a similar project in New Yorks Central Park using more complete skeletal remains of dinosaurs recently discovered there. Sadly that project was never completed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable lithograph from 1862, combining two of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins' iconic wall posters titled "Waterhouse Hawkins Diagrams of the Extinct Animals". Commissioned by the Department of Science and Art, this print represents a significant milestone in paleontological history as it includes nearly all known dinosaurs up to that date. The left side features the majestic Iguanodon, numbered 1 and 2, while Hylaeosaurus stands proudly at number 3. Megalosaurus takes center stage with numbers 4 and 5. In the background, perched on cliffs are pterosaurs - not dinosaurs - adding an extra layer of intrigue. Renowned for his groundbreaking work at Crystal Palace gardens in Sydenham during the mid-19th century, Waterhouse Hawkins collaborated closely with Richard Owen to create life-size reconstructions of prehistoric creatures. Although their ambitious project was cut short, Hawkins continued utilizing his designs for artistic endeavors like this lithograph. He even produced scale models of these sculptures for sale. Later on, he embarked on another grand venture across the Atlantic in New York's Central Park using more complete dinosaur skeletal remains recently discovered there. Regrettably, this endeavor remained unfinished. Paul D. Stewart's skillful restoration brings new life to this historical illustration capturing both artistry and scientific accuracy. This print serves as a testament to Waterhouse Hawkins' pioneering contributions to paleontology and ignites our imagination about Earth's ancient inhabitants from Jurassic times such as Mantell's Iguanodon or Buckland's Megalosaurus.
