Development of Arabic numerals
Development of Arabic numerals. Table illustrating the development and spread of numerals from the 1st to 14th centuries AD, as published in 1888 by the British philologist and canon Isaac Taylor (1829-1901). It is now widely accepted that todays symbols are Western Arabic numerals which originated from Indian Brahmi numerals. The nine Hindu-Arabic symbols (glyphs) had been introduced into Europe in the 13th century, principally by Fibonacci, but only came into general use two centuries later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the development and spread of Arabic numerals, shedding light on their historical significance. Published in 1888 by the esteemed British philologist and canon Isaac Taylor, this table provides a comprehensive overview of numerals from the 1st to 14th centuries AD. It is now widely acknowledged that today's symbols are derived from Indian Brahmi numerals, with Western Arabic numerals being their modern manifestation. The nine Hindu-Arabic glyphs depicted in this artwork were introduced into Europe during the 13th century by Fibonacci, although it took another two centuries for them to gain widespread usage. The table featured here is extracted from Edward Clodd's renowned book "The Story of the Alphabet" (1900), offering a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of numerical systems. With its intricate illustration and meticulous detailing, this photograph transports us back in time to an era when these symbols held immense cultural and mathematical significance. From ancient civilizations to medieval times, numbers have played a crucial role in human communication and understanding. As we explore this image further, we are reminded of how language transcends boundaries and evolves over time. This visual representation not only highlights the beauty of mathematics but also serves as a testament to our collective intellectual heritage.
