DEUCE computer, 1956
DEUCE computer. Operator using the Digital Electronic Universal Computing Engine (DEUCE) computer. This was a commercial version of the Pilot ACE (Automatic Computing Engine) design, one of the first computers built in the UK. The DEUCE, was manufactured between 1955 and 1964. The Pilot ACE had been based on a proposal by the British computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954). Photographed in 1956, in the Mathematics Division of the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of computing. Taken in 1956 at the Mathematics Division of the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK, it showcases an operator using the revolutionary DEUCE computer. Developed as a commercial version of the Pilot ACE design, which itself was inspired by Alan Turing's proposal, this cutting-edge machine marked one of the earliest computers built in Britain. The image depicts a female technician engrossed in her work, operating the DEUCE with precision and expertise. Her focused expression reflects both the complexity and excitement surrounding this new technology. The monochrome aesthetic adds to its historical charm, transporting us back to an era when computing was still in its infancy. Intricate calculations and mathematical analyses were made possible by this technological marvel. The DEUCE played a significant role not only within research laboratories but also within various fields such as physics and engineering across Europe. As we admire this photograph today, we are reminded of how far we have come since those early days of computing. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation that has propelled us into an age where information technology is seamlessly integrated into our daily lives. This image encapsulates not just a piece of British history but also highlights our relentless pursuit for progress in computational science throughout the 20th century.
