Desert in Chad from space
Sahara Desert in Chad seen from space. A sandstorm is seen at upper centre (white) over the Djourab region. The winds in this region blow predominantly towards the south-west, towards the horizon in this image. They are channelled between two highland areas (dark), the Tibesti Mountains (centre right) and the Ennedi Massif (centre left). These winds have created large streak features on the plains. The Tibesti Mountains are the highest point in the Sahara Desert. This photograph was taken by the space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-026 in October 1988

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vastness and beauty of the Sahara Desert in Chad as seen from space. The image showcases a sandstorm swirling at the upper center, its white hue contrasting against the arid landscape below. The dominant winds in this region blow towards the southwest, extending towards the horizon in this mesmerizing shot. The desert's unique topography is highlighted by two dark highland areas that channel these prevailing winds - the Tibesti Mountains on the center-right and the Ennedi Massif on the center-left. These mountain ranges play a crucial role in shaping both weather patterns and landforms across this expansive terrain. As evidenced by striking streak features etched onto its plains, these relentless winds have left their mark on Chad's desert landscape over time. Notably, it is worth mentioning that within this barren expanse lies an extraordinary geographical wonder -the Tibesti Mountains stand tall as they claim their title as being highest point within Sahara Desert. Taken during mission STS-026 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery back in October 1988, this photograph serves as a testament to human exploration and our ability to capture breathtaking images of Earth from outer space. It offers us a glimpse into an awe-inspiring corner of our planet while reminding us of nature's raw power and resilience amidst harsh conditions.
