Dead trees
Dead trees killed by the eruption of the volcano Mount St Helens. When Mount St Helens erupted in 1980, a titanic sideways blast ripped out the north side of the volcano and devastated a 600- square-kilometre area. Most of the mature trees in the heavily forested area were flattened. This area has not recovered from the blast, though new growth is seen amid the debris. Photographed in Washington State, USA, in 2001
