Cupped hands holding medicinal leeches

Leeches. Cupped hands holding medicinal leeches, Hirudo medicinalis. Medicinal leeches are parasites which drink the blood of animals, including humans. Leech saliva contains hirudin which prevents blood from clotting, and an anaesthetic so that the victim may be unaware that they have been bitten. Leeches were once used to treat illnesses attributed to an excess of blood. In modern medicine they are used for dissolving or draining accumulated blood (a haematoma) and for drawing blood into transplanted tissue until circulation is established. They can also be used as a source of drugs to clear blood clots (anti-coagulants)

Haematoma Leech Medicinal Parasite Hirudinea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the delicate balance between nature's wonders and their potential benefits in medicine. Cupped hands hold a group of medicinal leeches, Hirudo medicinalis, revealing the intricate beauty of these fascinating creatures. Known as parasites, they have long been known to drink the blood of various animals, including humans. The saliva of these leeches contains hirudin, a powerful substance that prevents blood from clotting. Additionally, it contains an anaesthetic which ensures that their victims remain unaware of being bitten. In ancient times, leeches were employed to treat illnesses believed to be caused by an excess of blood within the body. In modern medicine, however, their purpose has evolved. Leeches are now used for dissolving or draining accumulated blood within tissues (known as haematomas) and aiding in establishing circulation in transplanted tissue by drawing blood into it. Furthermore, they serve as a valuable source for drugs that can effectively clear dangerous blood clots. This remarkable image not only highlights the intriguing world of zoology and wildlife but also sheds light on how nature's creations can contribute significantly to medical advancements. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly unconventional organisms can play vital roles in improving human health and well-being.
