Crown-of-thorns starfish

Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) crawling over a sandy area between reefs. This starfish grows up to 40 centimetres in diameter and has 12-19 arms. The spines can cause pain, swelling, nausea and vomiting if touched by humans. It is a coral reef predator (corallivore) that preys on the coral polyps by extending its stomach over them and releasing digestive enzymes. This liquefies the corals tissue, which the starfish then absorbs. Photographed off Komodo, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty and intriguing nature of the Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci). Crawling gracefully over a sandy area between reefs, this starfish commands attention with its impressive size, growing up to 40 centimeters in diameter. Its distinctive appearance is characterized by 12-19 arms adorned with thorny spines that serve as both protection and warning. While its allure may be undeniable, caution must be exercised when encountering this creature. The spines of the Crown-of-thorns starfish can inflict pain, swelling, nausea, and even vomiting if touched by humans. As a coral reef predator or corallivore, it preys on coral polyps using a unique feeding strategy. By extending its stomach over them and releasing digestive enzymes, it effectively liquefies the corals' tissue before absorbing their nutrients. Photographed off Komodo in Indonesia's crystal-clear waters, this image transports us into an underwater realm teeming with life and diversity. Amidst the vibrant hues of tropical marine biology lies this predatory sea star - an integral part of the delicate ecosystem found within these Indonesian waters. As we admire this single specimen against a backdrop of sand and oceanic wonders, let us appreciate not only its striking features but also recognize the vital role it plays in maintaining balance beneath the waves. This photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of our planet's awe-inspiring biodiversity while highlighting the need for responsible conservation efforts to protect such remarkable creatures like Acanthaster planci.
