Cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev, 1962

Voskhod 2 spacecraft. Replica model of the Soviet spacecraft Voskhod 2. This spacecraft launched on 18 March 1965, carrying Alexei A. Leonov (flight engineer) and Pavel I. Belyayev (commander). It was during this mission that Leonov performed his historic spacewalk (EVA), the first ever. There were two Voskhod missions, the spacecraft being a stripped down version of a Vostok spacecraft. The Voskhod 1 carried three cosmonauts. Voskhod 2 was designed for two cosmonauts and had an inflatable airlock for Leonovs spacewalk. The round capsule was 2.4 metres in diameter. Later Voskhod missions were cancelled after problems with Voskhod 2

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic moment in history when Cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev embarked on a groundbreaking space mission aboard the Voskhod 2 spacecraft. The replica model of this Soviet spacecraft serves as a reminder of the incredible achievements made by these courageous pioneers. Launched on March 18,1965, with Alexei A. Leonov as the flight engineer and Pavel I. Belyayev as commander, Voskhod 2 became synonymous with Leonov's historic spacewalk (EVA), marking humanity's first-ever venture into the vastness of outer space. The Voskhod missions were an evolution from their predecessor, the Vostok spacecraft, with stripped-down versions designed to accommodate multiple cosmonauts. While Voskhod 1 carried three brave individuals into orbit, it was Voskhod 2 that featured an inflatable airlock specifically built for Leonov's daring excursion outside the capsule. With a diameter of 2.4 meters, this round capsule symbolizes both innovation and ambition. Unfortunately, subsequent Voskhod missions faced setbacks and were ultimately canceled due to issues encountered during the pioneering journey of Voskhod 2. Nevertheless, this photograph immortalizes Andrian Nikolayev's contribution to space exploration and reminds us of humanity's relentless pursuit to conquer new frontiers beyond Earth. Captured in timeless monochrome tones and showcasing a proud Russian pilot turned astronaut at his prime in his thirties
