cosmic ray atomic nuclei

Emulsion photograph showing the tracks of various cosmic ray nuclei, ranging from a hydrogen nucleus to an iron nucleus. The more protons a nucleus contains, the higher its positive electric charge & the greater its ability to ionise; the more it ionises, the denser its track in emulsion. Hydrog- en has 1 proton & produces a barely visible track. Ionisation depends on the square of the charge; so lithiums 3 protons have 9 times hydrogens charge & produce a track 9 times denser. Iron, with 26 protons, produces a track 676 times denser than hydrogen. The wispy strands that adorn the denser tracks are " delta rays" - electrons knocked out of atoms in the emulsion by the passing nucleus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of cosmic ray atomic nuclei. The image, captured using emulsion photography, reveals a mesmerizing array of tracks left behind by various cosmic ray nuclei, ranging from hydrogen to iron. Each nucleus's positive electric charge determines its ability to ionize and subsequently densify its track in the emulsion. As we delve into the world of subatomic particles, we witness how the number of protons within a nucleus directly correlates with its charge and ionization potential. Hydrogen, with only one proton, leaves behind a barely visible track. However, as we progress to lithium's three protons, we observe a nine-fold increase in charge and density. The true marvel lies in iron's presence within this photograph. With an astounding 26 protons packed into its nucleus, it generates a track that is an astonishing 676 times denser than hydrogen's feeble trail. Adorning these dense tracks are delicate wispy strands known as "delta rays" which represent electrons knocked out of atoms in the emulsion by passing nuclei. This monochrome image not only captures our imagination but also serves as a testament to the wonders of particle physics and high-energy cosmic rays. It offers us a glimpse into the hidden realms where mass and energy intertwine harmoniously while unraveling secrets about our universe's fundamental building blocks.
