Copepod crustacean, light micrograph

Copepod crustacean. Light micrograph of the nauplius larva of a copepod crustacean (subclass Copepoda). This is the first stage in the life cycle of a copepod. The nauplius stage is free- swimming, moving by jerky backwards movements of its elongated antennae (upper left and right) and its limbs (centre left and right). The body of the larva is covered in hair-like appendages (not seen), which increase its resistance to the water and help it to float. Copepods moult 6 times as a nauplius, then another 5 times before they become adults. Dark field illumination. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of a copepod crustacean in its nauplius larva stage. The image, taken using light micrography techniques, showcases the first phase of this fascinating creature's life cycle. As a free-swimming larva, it relies on jerky backward movements of its elongated antennae and limbs to navigate through water. The body of the nauplius larva is adorned with hair-like appendages that are not visible in this particular shot. These appendages serve multiple purposes - they increase the larvae's resistance to water and aid in buoyancy, helping them float effortlessly. Copepods undergo an astonishing transformation during their development. At this early stage, they molt six times as nauplii before undergoing another five molts to reach adulthood. This complex metamorphosis underscores their resilience and adaptability within aquatic ecosystems. The dark field illumination technique employed here adds depth and contrast to the image, highlighting every intricate detail of this tiny organism. While we do not know the exact magnification used for this photograph, it is evident that even at such a microscopic level, nature reveals stunning wonders. This mesmerizing print from Science Photo Library offers viewers a glimpse into the world of these remarkable creatures while celebrating the marvels of developmental biology and zoology found within our natural environment.
