Cone Nebula

Cone Nebula. Optical image of the dark Cone Nebula (lower left) and an emission nebula NGC 2264 (red, upper left) in the constellation Monoceros. North is at top. The Cone Nebula is the dark triangular intrusion into the lower edge of NGC 2264. The Cone Nebula is at least 6 light years long and is a site of star formation. NGC 2264 glows red due to the ionisation of hydrogen by radiation from the hot young star cluster (bright patch) within it. The brightest star in this cluster (above and left of the main glow) is the blue supergiant stars or 15 Monocerotis. This region is around 2600 light years distant

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Cone Nebula and NGC 2264 in the constellation Monoceros. The dark, triangular shape of the Cone Nebula can be seen as it intrudes into the lower edge of NGC 2264, which emits a stunning red glow due to hydrogen ionization caused by radiation from a hot young star cluster within it. Stretching at least 6 light years long, the Cone Nebula serves as a remarkable site for star formation. This region, located approximately 2600 light years away, is adorned with a plethora of stars and dust clouds that contribute to its ethereal appearance. Among these celestial wonders lies the brightest star in the cluster - a blue supergiant known as 15 Monocerotis. The image captures not only the awe-inspiring nature of this stellar birthplace but also provides valuable insights into our understanding of cosmology and astrophysics. It reminds us of how vast and mysterious our universe truly is, offering glimpses into processes such as stellar formation and evolution. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this breathtaking scene, allowing viewers to marvel at both its scientific significance and artistic allure. Whether you are an astronomy enthusiast or simply appreciate the wonderment found in nature's creations, this print will undoubtedly leave you captivated by its sheer beauty.
