Composite time-lapse images of solar eclipses

Solar eclipses. Composite time lapse images of a total solar eclipse (upper), a beaded eclipse (mi- ddle) & an annular eclipse (lower). Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. An annular eclipse occurs when the Earth is close to the Sun & far from the Moon. The disc of the Moon appears smaller than that of the Sun, so a ring (or annulus) of the Suns surface is visible. When the Earth is further from the Sun and closer to the moon, some of the annulus is blocked, causing a beaded eclipse. When the Earth is far from the Sun & close to the Moon, a total eclipse occurs with only the Suns outer atmosphere (corona, white) being visible

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of solar eclipses through composite time-lapse images. The upper portion captures the enchanting spectacle of a total solar eclipse, where the moon perfectly aligns between Earth and the Sun, creating a breathtaking sight. In the middle section, we witness a beaded eclipse, which occurs when our planet is further from the Sun and closer to the Moon. This unique positioning causes certain parts of the annulus to be blocked, resulting in an intricate pattern resembling beads of light. The lower segment portrays an annular eclipse, characterized by Earth's proximity to the Sun and distance from the Moon. During this celestial event, observers are treated to a remarkable phenomenon where the Moon appears smaller than our star's disc. As a result, a luminous ring or annulus forms around its edges as it partially obscures sunlight. These composite time-lapse images not only showcase various types of solar eclipses but also provide valuable insights into their occurrence and nature. They remind us that these extraordinary events occur when cosmic elements align in perfect harmony - with our moon casting its shadow upon our planet while revealing glimpses of our sun's ethereal outer atmosphere known as corona. Immerse yourself in this awe-inspiring visual journey that combines science and artistry seamlessly—a testament to humanity's fascination with celestial wonders captured by Science Photo Library.
