Common sheep tick, light micrograph

Common sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus), light micrograph. The sheep tick is an arachnid, and has eight legs. The mouthparts (upper centre) form a piercing lance with spines, which face backward, making ticks difficult to remove. They can remain on the skin for several days but when they have filled their body with blood they then drop off. The common sheep tick can infect its hosts (which include sheep and humans) with Lymes disease. Symptoms such as stiff muscles and joints, tiredness, fever, and lack of appetite, can cause sudden collapse. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Common sheep tick, captured under the lens of a light microscope. As an arachnid, this tiny creature possesses eight legs and unique mouthparts that form a piercing lance adorned with backward-facing spines. These features make ticks notoriously difficult to remove once they latch onto their hosts' skin. They can remain attached for several days, engorging themselves with blood until they are fully satiated before dropping off. However, what makes the common sheep tick particularly concerning is its ability to transmit Lyme disease to its hosts, including humans and sheep. This infectious disease manifests in various symptoms such as stiff muscles and joints, fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, it can even lead to sudden collapse. The magnified image provides us with a closer look at the anatomy of this parasitic creature – from its head and body structure to each individual leg – revealing the complexity of its biology. The scientific significance of this photograph lies in shedding light on entomology and zoology studies while serving as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by these seemingly innocuous creatures in our natural environment.
