Coloured ultraviolet TRACE image of suns surface

Sun plasma loops. Coloured ultraviolet TRACE sate- llite image of part of the suns surface with plasma loops. The surface is mostly at a temperature of 6000 degrees Celsius and appears relatively cool (dark). Above the surface however, the bright loops of highly ionised iron atoms are at temperatures of around 1 million degrees Celsius. These plasma loops arise from active areas on the solar surface and follow the paths of powerful magnetic fields. TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) studies the relationship of the magnetic fields to the plasma eruptions which sometimes affect Earth. This image was taken soon after TRACE was launched in April 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty and complexity of the sun's surface. Taken by the ultraviolet TRACE satellite, it reveals a colourful display of plasma loops that dance above the relatively cool (dark) surface. The temperature contrast is striking, with the majority of the surface measuring around 6000 degrees Celsius while these bright loops reach scorching temperatures of approximately 1 million degrees Celsius. These vibrant plasma loops are a result of active areas on the solar surface and trace the paths of powerful magnetic fields. They provide valuable insights into our understanding of how magnetic fields interact with plasma eruptions that occasionally impact Earth. This image was captured shortly after TRACE's launch in April 1998, marking an important milestone in our exploration and study of these celestial phenomena. The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) satellite has been instrumental in unraveling the intricate relationship between magnetic fields and plasma dynamics within our Sun. Its ultraviolet imagery allows scientists to delve deeper into this cosmic ballet, shedding light on fundamental processes occurring millions of kilometers away from us. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph, we are reminded once again of both the immense power contained within our star and humanity's insatiable curiosity to comprehend its mysteries. Science Photo Library has immortalized this remarkable moment for all enthusiasts passionate about astronomy, cosmology, and scientific discovery alike.
