Coloured TEM of a single Beijing influenza virus

Influenza virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single Beijing influenza virus. The virus consists of a core of ribonucleic acid (RNA, blue) surrounded by a spiked protein envelope of haemagglutinin (orange). The spikes adhere to host cells during infection. The virus has an affinity for mucus, and is transmitted by coughed or sneezed droplets inhaled into the respiratory tract. Influenza infection is usually short-lived. The haemagglutinin spikes of the virus, however, can change structure to create a new influenza strain such as this Beijing strain which spread as an epidemic in 1993. Magnification: x135, 000 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single Beijing influenza virus. The intricate details captured in this image reveal the complex structure of the virus, which consists of a core made up of ribonucleic acid (RNA) depicted in blue, surrounded by a spiked protein envelope known as haemagglutinin shown in vibrant orange. These spikes play a crucial role during infection as they adhere to host cells, facilitating the invasion process. Influenza viruses like this one have an affinity for mucus and are primarily transmitted through coughed or sneezed droplets that are then inhaled into the respiratory tract. While influenza infections are typically short-lived, it is important to note that the haemagglutinin spikes possess an extraordinary ability to change their structure. This capability allows them to create new strains of influenza such as this Beijing strain, which caused an epidemic back in 1993. The magnification used for capturing this image was x135,000 at a size of 6x4.5cm, enabling us to appreciate the intricate beauty and complexity hidden within these tiny viral particles. This photograph serves as both a scientific marvel and an artistic representation showcasing the fascinating world of viruses and their impact on our health.
