Coloured TEM of a Lewy body in Parkinsons disease

Parkinsons disease. Coloured transmission elect- ron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a Lewy body in a nerve cell in the brain, a diagnostic feature of Parkinsons disease. Lewy bodies are largely made up of filaments of the brain protein alpha-synuclein (blue/pink). Parkinsons disease causes degeneration of nerve cells in the brain, leading to muscle tremors, rigidity and incapacit- ation. It is characterised by the appearance of Lewy bodies, mainly in the substantia nigra, a part of the brain which helps regulate movements. The formation of these filaments is thought to be responsible for the degeneration of the nerve cells. Magnification: x2750 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Lewy body found in Parkinson's disease. The intricate details captured in this image provide valuable insights into the diagnostic features of this debilitating condition. Lewy bodies, predominantly composed of brain protein alpha-synuclein, are highlighted in shades of blue and pink. Parkinson's disease is notorious for its degenerative impact on nerve cells within the brain, resulting in muscle tremors, rigidity, and incapacitation. A defining characteristic of this illness is the emergence of Lewy bodies, primarily concentrated in the substantia nigra - a vital region responsible for regulating movements. The formation of these filamentous structures is believed to be directly linked to the deterioration experienced by nerve cells. With an impressive magnification level set at x2750 and printed at 6x7cm size, this photograph allows us to delve deeper into understanding the complexities surrounding Parkinson's disease. As we explore this visual representation further, we gain a greater appreciation for both the intricacies of our neurological system and the challenges faced by those affected by Parkinson's disease. This powerful image serves as a reminder that continued research and advancements in medicine are crucial towards finding effective treatments or even potential cures for such conditions.
