Coloured SEM of wing scales of Morpho butterfly

Butterfly wing. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of scales on the wing of a male Morpho butterfly (family: Morphidae) found in Brazil. Here, the tiny overlapping scales that cover the butterfly wing are seen. The male butterfly of Morpho sp. is brightly coloured, in some species an iridescent green or blue. Layers of wing scales are transparent but refract and reflect light of different colours to different extents. This produces a shimmering appearance which is used in the males for sexual attraction. The females are coloured brown. There are about 50 species of Morpho, occurring in South America. Magnification: x70 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a male Morpho butterfly's wing scales. The image, captured using a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals the mesmerizing patterns created by the tiny overlapping scales that adorn the butterfly's wings. Found in Brazil, this particular species of Morpho is known for its vibrant and iridescent green or blue coloration. The transparent layers of wing scales possess unique optical properties, refracting and reflecting light to create an enchanting shimmering effect. This visual spectacle serves as a powerful tool for sexual attraction among male Morpho butterflies, while females display more subdued brown hues. Belonging to the family Morphidae and with approximately 50 different species occurring in South America, these delicate creatures are not only fascinating subjects for zoologists but also serve as a testament to nature's artistic prowess. At a magnification of x70 on a 6x4.5cm scale, this photograph allows us to appreciate every minute detail present on the butterfly's wing. It reminds us of the incredible diversity found within our natural world and offers insight into how even something as small as an insect can captivate our imagination with its extraordinary beauty.
