Coloured SEM of uterus wall (early proliferation)
Uterus (early proliferation). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the endometrium (lining) of the human uterus during the early proliferative stage of the menstrual cycle. The cells of the endometrium are not clearly defined, but their cilia (light green) and secretory microvilli (blue & dark green) can be seen. The uterine lining builds up during early/late proliferation (the first 14 days of the cycle) to prepare for pregnancy. Then an egg is released and the lining becomes secretory to nourish the embryo. If no pregnancy occurs, the endometrium breaks down at menstruation after 28 days. Magnification unknown

Early Endometrium Menstrual Cycle Microvilli Mucosa Proliferation Re Production Reproductive System Uterus
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the uterus wall during its early proliferative stage. The endometrium, which lines the human uterus, is depicted in all its intricate beauty. Although the individual cells are not clearly defined, one can marvel at the presence of delicate cilia in light green and secretory microvilli in shades of blue and dark green. During this crucial phase of the menstrual cycle, lasting approximately 14 days, the uterine lining undergoes remarkable changes to prepare for potential pregnancy. It steadily builds up as it anticipates nurturing an embryo that may implant itself within its folds. However, if fertilization does not occur within this timeframe, nature takes its course: after precisely 28 days, menstruation commences and signals the breakdown of this meticulously constructed endometrium. The magnification used to capture this image remains unknown but serves as a reminder that even on a microscopic level, our bodies possess extraordinary complexity. This photograph offers us a glimpse into the fascinating world of female reproductive anatomy – from mucosa to ciliated cells and everything in between. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring visual representation that highlights both scientific knowledge and artistic appreciation for our miraculous human form.
