Coloured SEM of head of the Zora spinimana spider

Common garden spider. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a common garden spider, Zora spinimana. The spiders eight eyes (upper centre) are clearly seen here as rounded bumps. Below the eyes are two large chelicerae which carry teeth for biting prey. Next to the chelicerae are the spiders pedipalps. This spider is extremely common in European gardens. It inhabits moss and grasses especially in damp places. The egg sac is found in summer near ground level. The egg sac has no outer covering so the female will guard it under a dried leaf or a stone. Magnification: x9 at 6x6cm size. Magnification: x22.5 at 7x6.5ins size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of the head of a Zora spinimana spider, commonly known as the Common garden spider. Through a colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of this fascinating creature. The image highlights the spider's eight eyes, which appear as rounded bumps in the upper center. Just below these eyes, two large chelicerae can be observed, equipped with teeth used for biting prey. Adjacent to the chelicerae are the spiders' pedipalps. The Zora spinimana spider is an abundant species found in European gardens, often inhabiting moss and grassy areas, particularly damp environments. During summer months, one can come across their egg sacs near ground level. Interestingly, these sacs lack an outer covering; hence female spiders diligently guard them under dried leaves or stones. With magnifications reaching x9 at 6x6cm size and x22.5 at 7x6.5ins size respectively, this SEM image offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the world of invertebrates and wildlife biology. It serves as a reminder of nature's remarkable diversity and complexity while showcasing Science Photo Library's commitment to capturing awe-inspiring moments from our natural world without commercial intent or affiliation with any specific company.
