Coloured SEM of foraminiferan, Peneroplis sp

Foraminiferan shell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the test (shell) of the Mediterranean foraminiferan, Peneroplis proteus. Foraminifera are single-celled protozoa which construct and inhabit shells composed of several chambers. These are usually penetrated by pores through which the cellular contents is extruded. The organisms live in the sea or salt- water lakes. The shells form an important component of chalk. In previous geological ages foraminifera occurred in such large numbers that their shells, largely of calcium carbonate, have formed fossil deposits seen today as limestone. Magnification: x47 at 6x7cm size. x110 at 6.25x4.75ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a foraminiferan shell. The image depicts the test, or shell, of Peneroplis proteus, a Mediterranean foraminiferan. Foraminifera are single-celled protozoa that construct and reside in shells composed of multiple chambers. These shells often feature pores through which cellular contents are extruded. These fascinating organisms thrive in saltwater environments such as the sea or saltwater lakes. Their shells play a vital role in forming chalk, an essential component found in various geological formations. In ancient times, foraminifera were so abundant that their calcium carbonate-based shells formed fossil deposits seen today as limestone. The magnification level used to capture this image was x47 at 6x7cm size and x110 at 6.25x4.75ins size, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details and structures present within this tiny creature's shell. This photograph not only highlights the natural beauty found within our oceans but also serves as a reminder of the diverse wonders that exist on our planet—showcasing nature's remarkable ability to create stunning forms even at microscopic scales.
