Coloured SEM of dog hairs

Dog hair. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the shafts of dog hairs. Each hair shaft has an outer cuticle of flat over-lapping scales or plates, as seen here, which it is thought, prevent the hairs from matting together. Hair is made up of a fibrous protein called keratin. Internally the hair shaft is divided into three concentric sheaths (layers) called the medulla, cortex and outer cuticle. It consists of non- living tissue. Hair growth occurs when epidermal cells divide within the root bulb, and as they are pushed out of the hair follicle they become increasingly keratinised to form tough scales. Magnification: x550 at 5x7cm size. x1, 480 at 8x6ins, x790 at 10x7cm master size

Animal Body Hair Keratin Shaft

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of dog hairs through a colored Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the shafts of these hairs, each possessing an outer cuticle composed of flat over-lapping scales or plates. These scales are believed to play a crucial role in preventing the hairs from tangling and matting together. The composition of hair is primarily made up of a fibrous protein called keratin, which gives it its strength and resilience. Internally, the hair shaft is divided into three concentric sheaths known as the medulla, cortex, and outer cuticle. It is important to note that hair consists entirely of non-living tissue. Hair growth occurs when epidermal cells divide within the root bulb. As these cells are pushed outwards from the hair follicle, they gradually become more keratinized and form tough scales on their surface. With a magnification level reaching x550 at 5x7cm size, this SEM print provides an extraordinary close-up view into the world of dog hairs. At larger sizes such as x1,480 at 8x6ins or even x790 at 10x7cm master size, every minute detail becomes even more pronounced and awe-inspiring. This remarkable photograph by Science Photo Library offers an intriguing glimpse into the anatomy of dog hair while highlighting its unique structure and properties without any commercial intent.
