Colour X-ray: coronary artery in Kawasaki disease
Kawasaki disease. Coloured angiogram (X-ray) of abnormal coronary arteries in a child suffering from Kawasaki disease. The large aorta artery (yellow) forms a loop, which appears to end at centre where this artery exits from the heart (not visible). At this point, small coronary arteries are visible coming off the aorta. These coronary arteries are abnormal and weakened in that they bulge into balloon shapes (aneurysms) along their lengths. Kawasaki disease is a childhood illness between ages 1-2 years. Fever, swollen lymph nodes and a rash occurs. Coronary artery disease (seen here) may also occur with heart complications, and some cases result in heart failure and death

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured angiogram, revealing the intricate details of abnormal coronary arteries in a child suffering from Kawasaki disease. The vibrant image highlights the large aorta artery, depicted in yellow, forming an intriguing loop that seems to terminate at the center where it exits from the heart (although not visible). From this point, small coronary arteries branch off from the aorta. However, these particular coronary arteries exhibit abnormalities and weakness as they bulge into balloon-like shapes known as aneurysms along their lengths. Kawasaki disease is primarily observed in children between the ages of 1 and 2 years old. Symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash often accompany this childhood illness. Unfortunately, complications can arise within the cardiovascular system leading to coronary artery disease - which is evident in this image. In severe cases, heart failure and even death may occur. As we delve into this medical marvel captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both the fragility and resilience of our bodies. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder for healthcare professionals about the importance of early detection and intervention when dealing with conditions like Kawasaki disease that can have serious implications on cardiac health.
