Colour TEM of red blood cells, rouleau formation

Red blood cells. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of sectioned human red blood cells (erythrocytes) in a rouleau formation. These cells often stick together in this stacked formation due to their biconcave shape. This shape increases surface area for the exchange of gases. The red inside of the cell contains no nucleus or organelles. Instead, each cell is packed with haemoglobin, a red iron- containing pigment which has an efficient oxygen carrying capacity. The principal function of erythrocytes is the distribution and transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body. Magnification: x7200 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the mesmerizing beauty of red blood cells in a rouleau formation. The image, captured using a Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM), reveals sectioned human red blood cells (erythrocytes) stacked together due to their unique biconcave shape. This stacking phenomenon allows these cells to efficiently exchange gases, as the increased surface area facilitates this vital process. The absence of a nucleus or organelles inside these erythrocytes is strikingly evident in the vibrant red color that fills each cell. Instead, they are densely packed with haemoglobin, an iron-containing pigment responsible for their remarkable oxygen-carrying capacity. These specialized cells play a crucial role in distributing and transporting both oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body. Magnified at an astonishing x7200 and printed at 6x7cm size, this microscopic image offers viewers a glimpse into the intricate world of human biology. It serves as a reminder of how even the tiniest components within our bodies contribute to our overall well-being. This stunning photograph is not just visually captivating but also holds immense scientific significance in fields such as haematology and histology. Its inclusion in Science Photo Library's collection highlights its value as an educational tool for those studying subjects related to anatomy and cellular biology.
