Colon cancer, barium X-ray C018 / 0574
Colon cancer. Coloured X-ray of the large intestine of a 62 year old patient with cancer of the sigmoid colon. The patient was given a barium enema prior to the X-ray to show up any abnormalities. The irregular filling of the sigmoid colon with the barium (purple) shows the presence of a tumour (dark area at lower centre) in the large intestine. The sigmoid colon is the last part of the large intestine before the rectum. Also present are diverticula, small pouch-like structures that protrude out of weak spots in the intestinal wall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate details of colon cancer in a 62-year-old patient's large intestine. Prior to this X-ray, the patient underwent a barium enema procedure to highlight any abnormalities. The irregular filling of the sigmoid colon with purple-colored barium reveals the presence of a tumor, depicted as a dark area at the lower center of the image. The sigmoid colon, which is part of the large intestine just before the rectum, showcases not only this malignant growth but also diverticula - small pouch-like structures that protrude from weak spots in the intestinal wall. These additional features add complexity to an already concerning diagnosis. The monochrome image emphasizes both medical and diagnostic aspects, providing valuable insights into colorectal cancer and its impact on human health. It serves as a powerful tool for healthcare professionals specializing in oncology and neoplastic diseases. By utilizing contrast medium and radiography techniques through an X-ray machine, this photograph offers crucial information for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Its scientific significance lies within its ability to showcase disease progression within our complex digestive system. ZEPHYR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY presents this remarkable visual representation solely for educational purposes related to understanding bowel cancer and its characteristics without any commercial intent or affiliation mentioned.
