Cladoselache sharks
Cladoselache sharks. Artwork of two Cladoselache sharks swimming. This genus of prehistoric shark existed during the late Devonian period (roughly 370 million years ago). The long, streamlined body (adults measured up to 2 metres in length), and deep forked tail enabled it to swim quickly. Unlike modern sharks and most prehistoric sharks, Cladoselache lacked scales on its skin, and males lacked sexual claspers. Modern sharks use their claspers to grip onto the female during sexual intercourse. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage and do not fossilise well. The only parts that fossilise are teeth and parts of the fins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the ancient Cladoselache sharks in their natural habitat, offering a glimpse into the prehistoric world of these fascinating creatures. Swimming gracefully through the depths of an underwater realm, two Cladoselache sharks are depicted with meticulous detail and precision. Belonging to a genus that thrived during the late Devonian period over 370 million years ago, these sharks possessed remarkable adaptations for swift movement. Their elongated bodies, reaching up to 2 meters in length, were perfectly streamlined while their deep forked tails propelled them through the water with impressive speed. Unlike modern sharks and many other prehistoric species, Cladoselache lacked scales on its skin and males did not possess sexual claspers. These unique characteristics make this ancient shark even more intriguing to scientists studying their evolutionary history. Although shark skeletons are predominantly composed of cartilage which does not fossilize well, fragments such as teeth and parts of fins have allowed us to piece together information about these magnificent creatures from our distant past. Through this stunning illustration by Science Photo Library, we can appreciate both the beauty and scientific significance of Cladoselache sharks. It serves as a reminder that our planet's history is filled with awe-inspiring organisms that have shaped life as we know it today.
