Chrysomelid beetles

Chrysomelid beetles (Platyphora aulica). These specimens have been preserved so that their haemolymph (body fluid) can be preserved. This leaf beetle is brightly coloured to warn predators that they are toxic to eat. Such toxic chemicals may however be of benefit to humans. These and other insects are being screened in search of new antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs by a company called Entomed, based in Strasbourg in France. Between 1999 and 2003, Entomed analysed more than 175 novel molecules with potential medical effects

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vibrant beauty of Chrysomelid beetles, specifically Platyphora aulica. These remarkable specimens have been carefully preserved to retain their haemolymph, or body fluid. The striking colors of this leaf beetle serve as a warning sign to potential predators that they are toxic and should not be consumed. Interestingly, these toxic chemicals found within the beetles may hold great value for humans. Entomed, a pioneering company based in Strasbourg, France, is dedicated to exploring the medical potential of various insects including these beetles. They meticulously screen and analyze these creatures in search of new breakthroughs in antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and even anti-cancer drugs. Over a span from 1999 to 2003 alone, Entomed examined more than 175 novel molecules derived from such insects with promising medicinal effects. The field of entomology plays an essential role in this research endeavor as it unravels the biological secrets hidden within insect species like chrysomelidae. This particular photograph represents just one facet of Entomed's extensive work on multiple clinical fronts. As we delve deeper into understanding nature's intricate designs through biology and zoology studies, we uncover invaluable resources that could potentially revolutionize medicine. Science Photo Library has captured this extraordinary moment frozen in time – an exquisite testament to both the wonders of our natural world and humanity's relentless pursuit for scientific advancement.
